Essential Add-on

MP3 Plug-in (LAME Encoder)

Due to patent license restrictions, the standard InfraRecorder package does not include the plug-in needed to encode MP3 files. To enable MP3 support for your audio projects, download this plug-in separately.

Download ir053_mp3_plugin.zip (387.1 kB)

How to Install:

  • 1 Download and extract the ZIP archive.
  • 2 Copy the lame.irc file.
  • 3 Paste it into your InfraRecorder installation directory.

3-Minute Setup Guide

Follow these steps to ensure a perfect installation on modern Windows systems.

1

Launch Installer

Run ir053.exe. If Windows SmartScreen appears, click “More Info” then “Run Anyway”. The installer is safe and open-source.

2

Choose Components

Select “Full Installation” to include the Shell Extension. This allows you to right-click files in Windows Explorer to burn them directly.

3

Finalize & Run

Once finished, right-click the InfraRecorder icon on your desktop and select “Properties > Compatibility” to set it to run as Administrator.

Why the manual steps? InfraRecorder was originally optimized for the Windows 7 era. On Windows 11 and 10, the operating system’s security layers (UAC) are much stricter. By following this guide, you bypass common hardware detection issues and ensure the software can communicate directly with your CD/DVD/BD-RE drive’s firmware via the SPTI (SCSI Pass Through Interface) layer.

How to Uninstall InfraRecorder

If you need to remove InfraRecorder from your system, the process is straightforward. Because InfraRecorder is built with standard Windows protocols, it leaves no stubborn background services behind.

Standard Removal:

  1. Open the Start Menu and select Settings.
  2. Navigate to Apps > Apps & Features (or Programs and Features).
  3. Locate InfraRecorder in the list.
  4. Click Uninstall and follow the on-screen prompts.

Cleaning the Portable Version

The Portable version does not appear in the “Apps & Features” list. To remove it completely:

  • Delete the folder containing the InfraRecorder files.
  • If you created a desktop shortcut, delete it manually.
  • No registry cleaning is required as settings are stored in local .xml files.
Note: Projects saved as .irp files will not be deleted; you must remove them manually if no longer needed.

Installation Help & FAQ

Everything you need to know about setting up InfraRecorder 0.53.

Which version should I download?

For most modern PCs, the ir053_x64.msi is recommended. If you are using an older 32-bit system or a legacy machine (Win XP), use ir053.exe. If you want to run the app from a USB drive without installation, choose the Portable ZIP.

Windows SmartScreen “Unrecognized App” warning?

Since InfraRecorder is an older open-source tool, Windows 10/11 might flag it. This is a common false positive. As long as you have verified the MD5 checksum, you can safely click “More info” and “Run anyway” to proceed with the installation.

How do I perform a silent unattended installation?

The InfraRecorder installer supports the /S parameter for silent installs. You can also specify a language, for example: irsetup.exe /S /LANGUAGE=english.

Is there a virus in the MP3 plugin?

No. The ir053_mp3_plugin.zip contains the LAME encoder library. Some antivirus software might flag DLL files from unofficial sources, but the file provided here is the original binary archive from the developer.
